“More than half of UK prisoners were excluded from school. Hussein, the founder of CAPE Mentors wants to tackle that problem head on. By combining academic support with dedicated mentoring, Hussein wants to turn the tide on exclusion and help at-risk students remain in school. CAPE Mentors provides tuition and mentoring services to children at risk of exclusion and those permanently excluded without school placement.”

About CAPE Mentors and Hussein Hussein

Hussein Hussein was an Assistant Head of a London Pupil Referral Unit, where he observed that excluded children were provided with inadequate provision, particularly in that they received inconsistent support from unqualified teachers. He founded CAPE Mentors to raise the standard of support available to these children by pairing them with qualified teachers and to support students demonstrating challenging behaviour with the dual support of academic and personal development to facilitate their return to full-time education.

Unlike most tuition agencies, CAPE Mentors teachers also serve as mentors – this creates a holistic approach of daily tutoring and meaningful mentor conversations which enables children to go back into education successfully or keep those at risk of exclusion in school.

Having successfully piloted the scheme in a few local authorities, Hussein now plans to recruit a small cohort of teachers to join CAPE Mentors to expand their reach across London.
