About the Chartered College of Teaching and Beth O’Brien

Beth O’Brien

Chartered College’s internal innovation aims to improve teaching for students with SEND through an online journal club for teachers and support staff that will focus on effective teaching approaches for students with SEND and how these can be embedded into teaching practice.

My role as an educator is rooted in a staunch commitment to reducing the educational inequality gap. In my nine years in the classroom, I have worked alongside both teachers and teaching assistants equally committed to this goal, working tirelessly to support the most vulnerable in our classrooms. However, I have also seen first-hand that without adequate resources or training any attempt to close this gap poses a significant challenge.

In my previous role as Head of English, I was determined to change this. Research continuously shows that high-quality teaching is the most important in-school factor for student achievement. As such, I committed to investing in the professional development of my team, supporting them to engage with educational research to make informed decisions about their practice. This approach had a powerful impact on student progress and, most importantly, reduced the attainment gap in our subject area.” - Beth O’Brien
