Calling for mental health reform in schools: a youth voice in the House of Lords
Last week marked an unforgettable milestone in my journey: I delivered my Maiden Speech in the House of Lords, representing the Fair Education Alliance Youth Steering Group through Speakers Trust. It’s still sinking in – the gravity of the moment, the weight of the words, and the privilege of the platform.
Speaking during Mental Health Week, I chose to share something incredibly personal: a call for urgent reform in supporting mental health in schools. My speech was inspired by the devastating loss of Alex Henshaw, a young life gone far too soon. Tragically, his story is not unique. Across the country, young people are navigating grief, pressure, and emotional turmoil – often in silence.

Schools must be more than just academic institutions. They should be safe havens where students are heard, supported, and emotionally nurtured. That means equipping educators to recognise early signs of mental health decline, destigmatising conversations about mental health, and ensuring that professional support is readily available. We owe it to Alex – and the many like him – to respond with action, not silence.
I am profoundly grateful to Speakers Trust and the Fair Education Alliance for entrusting me with this opportunity. Being part of the FEA Youth Steering Group has been life changing. It’s shown me that public speaking isn’t about natural talent – it’s about growth, courage, and persistence. Through this experience, I’ve found my voice and gained the confidence to use it.
I hope that this moment sparks change – that we move closer to a world where every young person feels seen, safe, and supported in school. Because mental health isn’t a luxury – it’s a necessity. No one should have to face it alone.
Here’s to honouring stories with action and building a better future for the next generation.
