A-Level Results Day - every pathway should be open to all
This Thursday, thousands of young people across the country will receive their A-Level results and take their next steps into higher education, apprenticeships, employment, or other routes. It’s a moment of both excitement and uncertainty, and, too often, inequity.
Despite talent being spread evenly, opportunity is not. Persistent gaps in access to university, further education, and employment show that background, income, and postcode continue to shape outcomes. From a 20.8% gap in university access to a 3.3-grade gap in further education, young people from low-income households still face systemic barriers to reaching their goals.
That’s why we’re calling for a post-16 education system that empowers every young person to thrive, whatever path they choose. That means ensuring all young people have a clear route into meaningful work, and that they are equipped to contribute to tomorrow’s world. To get there, we must close the digital divide, upskill teachers and schools in effective use of technology, and prioritise the development of essential skills like communication, creativity, and collaboration.
Many of our members are already working to make this vision a reality.
“Good luck to everyone receiving their results this week, especially those we’ve supported through our university access programmes. Reaching this milestone is a powerful achievement, but we know that disadvantage doesn’t disappear on results day. Students from less advantaged backgrounds are more likely to face barriers during their university journey, including higher drop-out rates and lower degree outcomes. That’s why we’re committed to supporting students beyond access, helping them to thrive once they arrive at university and throughout their studies. ”
“A-Level Results Day is a pivotal moment, not just for celebration, but for reflection. Too many students with strong academic profiles end up on courses that don’t match their potential - a trend known as ‘undermatching’. This can affect degree outcomes, completion rates, and future earnings, and disproportionately impacts students on Free School Meals. As schools guide students through clearing and confirmation, it’s also a time to reflect on the year-round guidance provided, ensuring every young person can make informed, aspirational choices that reflect their true potential.”
As the labour market evolves and the cost of living rises, young people need both support and choice, and the confidence that their future isn’t limited by their background. Let’s celebrate their achievements this week and redouble our commitment to making every pathway truly open to all.
