A note from our Chair as we look ahead
It was wonderful to spend time with so many members, partners and policymakers at our recent Fair Education Summit! I found the day revitalising and thought-provoking, and it was a timely reminder of the Alliance’s unique role as both a convenor and a catalyst for change. It was especially thrilling to be part of the launch of our place-based collaborations with Mayoral Combined Authorities: a vital step towards an education system that works with and for the local people who understand it best. Thank you to everyone who contributed so thoughtfully and generously on the day.
2026 is a year like no other for our Alliance. As we build momentum in our Neighbourhood to National strategy, there are significant opportunities for you, our members. You’ll be able to join our thematic and place-based collaborations, using your expertise to co-create solutions that meet specific needs. You’ll shape our policy-influencing work, ensuring that fairness is central to the Government’s plans for education. And you’ll have access to the resources to develop and equip leaders within your organisation.
This year also brings change for me personally. In April, I will be moving on from my role at Mulberry Schools Trust to take up a new position as Regional Director for London at the Department for Education. This is a role I feel privileged to be stepping into and one that reflects my long-standing commitment to improving outcomes for children and young people across the country.
As a result of this appointment, I will be stepping down as Chair of the Fair Education Alliance.
It has been a great honour to serve as Chair since 2019. I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved together – laying the strong foundations that we build on today, amplifying the voices of those who are too often unheard, and growing a coalition that is respected, influential, and values-driven. None of this would have been possible without the commitment, expertise and integrity of our members and wider supporters.
I’d like to thank Sam Butters and Gina Cicerone for their tireless and inspirational leadership of the FEA, and the team for their deep commitment to social justice. I’d also like to thank my Vice Chair, Zulum Elomogu, and fellow trustees for all their support and guidance over the past 7 years.
The board will now lead the process of appointing a new Chair to guide the Alliance into its next chapter. I have every confidence in the strength of the organisation and its leadership, and I look forward to continuing to champion the Alliance’s mission in my new role.
With my warmest thanks to you all,
Dr Vanessa Ogden CBE
Chair of the Fair Education Alliance
